PATNA---------------------------The brutal murder of notorious gangster Chandan Mishra in Patna’s Paras Hospital has taken a dramatic turn, with Buxar police identifying Monu Singh as a key suspect and arresting several shooters from West Bengal. The high-profile case, which has sent shockwaves through Bihar’s law enforcement, has revealed a complex web of gang rivalries, jail-based conspiracies, and potential hospital complicity. The investigation, led by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the supervision of senior police officials, has also implicated another criminal, Amit Singh, operating from Gaya jail, and raised suspicions about a Paras Hospital doctor. As police intensify raids and interrogate suspects, the case underscores the challenges of tackling organized crime in Bihar.

The Crime: A Brazen Hospital Assassination

On the morning of Thursday, July 17, 2025, Chandan Mishra, a dreaded gangster from Sonbarsa in Buxar’s Industrial police station area, was gunned down inside the ICU ward of Paras Hospital in Patna. The assailants, numbering five to six, entered the private ward where Mishra was recovering post-surgery and shot him dead before calmly exiting the hospital. The audacity of the attack, executed in broad daylight within a secure medical facility, has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about hospital security and possible insider involvement.

Chandan Mishra, a convicted criminal serving a life sentence for the 2011 murder of a lime trader in Buxar, was out on a 15-day parole, ostensibly to arrange treatment for his father. However, at the time of the attack, he was undergoing treatment for fistula and laparoscopic surgery at Paras Hospital, where he had been admitted on July 15, 2025. Mishra’s criminal record is extensive, with over two dozen cases of murder, extortion, robbery, and Arms Act violations registered against him, making his killing a significant event in Bihar’s criminal underworld.

Police Response: Swift Action and Raids

The murder triggered an immediate and robust response from law enforcement across Bihar and beyond. Patna Police, Buxar Police, and the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) launched coordinated efforts to apprehend the culprits. The investigation gained momentum after Patna Police shared intelligence with Buxar Police, identifying two Buxar-based criminals—Monu Singh from Belaur and Balwant Kumar, alias Bhindi, from Mahuar—as key suspects. The revelation that the suspects may have fled toward Buxar prompted Buxar Police to seal the Bihar-Uttar Pradesh border and conduct extensive vehicle checks and raids.

On Thursday night, Buxar Police detained three individuals traveling in a suspicious Scorpio vehicle near the Ganga Setu bridge. Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Dhiraj Kumar confirmed that the trio was interrogated for hours, but no concrete evidence linking them to the murder was found. However, further investigation confirmed Monu Singh’s involvement, with evidence placing him in Patna at the time of the crime. The identity of Balwant Kumar remains under scrutiny, as local residents questioned by police indicated that a photograph provided by Patna Police resembled him but was not conclusive. Technical investigations, including CCTV footage analysis, are ongoing to verify his involvement.

In a significant breakthrough on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Bihar STF, in collaboration with West Bengal STF, arrested several shooters involved in the murder from West Bengal. While Patna Police have not officially confirmed the number of arrests, sources indicate that the operation targeted members of a gang led by Omkar Singh, alias Sheru Singh, a notorious criminal currently incarcerated in Purulia jail, West Bengal. Sheru Singh is suspected to be the mastermind behind the assassination, orchestrating the plot through his associates, some of whom are believed to be operating from jails in Bihar.

Jail-Based Conspiracy: Sheru Singh and Amit Singh

The investigation has uncovered a chilling jail-based nexus, with evidence suggesting that the murder was planned from within correctional facilities. Sheru Singh, a long-time associate-turned-rival of Chandan Mishra, is believed to have orchestrated the killing from Purulia jail. Police sources revealed that Sheru Singh provided critical information during interrogations on Friday and Saturday, admitting that the conspiracy was hatched by a member of his gang incarcerated in a Bihar jail. The identity of this associate has not been disclosed, but police are preparing to interrogate the individual to uncover further details.

Additionally, a new lead has emerged implicating Amit Singh, a notorious criminal lodged in Gaya jail. Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikey Sharma confirmed that Amit Singh’s name has surfaced in connection with the murder, stemming from a personal dispute with Mishra. Amit Singh’s associate, Balwant Kumar, is suspected of being one of the five shooters involved in the attack. Balwant, a resident of Mahuar in Buxar, is believed to have acted on Amit Singh’s instructions, having previously executed criminal activities under his command. Police have taken Amit Singh into custody for questioning, and efforts are underway to apprehend Balwant and other shooters.

Hospital Complicity? Allegations Against Paras Hospital

A shocking twist in the case came from Chandan Mishra’s father, Shrikant Mishra (alias Mantu Mishra), who filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Shastrinagar police station against Paras Hospital’s administration and general surgeon Dr. Pintu Kumar Singh. Shrikant alleged a conspiracy, claiming that lapses in hospital security and suspicious actions by Dr. Singh facilitated the murder. According to the FIR, Chandan was admitted on July 15, 2025, for surgery, which was performed by Dr. Singh between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Initially, the doctor informed the family that Chandan would be discharged on July 16 at 4:00 PM. However, the discharge was postponed to July 17, and on the morning of the same day, at around 7:15 AM, the attackers entered the ICU and executed the murder.

Shrikant’s allegations have cast a shadow over Paras Hospital, raising questions about how armed criminals gained access to a secure ward. The ease with which the shooters entered and exited the hospital has led police to investigate potential insider involvement, with Dr. Singh under scrutiny. The SIT is examining hospital staff records, security protocols, and CCTV footage to determine whether negligence or collusion allowed the attackers to carry out the crime undetected.

Gang Rivalry: The Motive Behind the Murder

Additional Director General (ADG) of Police Headquarters, Kundan Krishnan, stated that preliminary investigations point to a gang rivalry as the primary motive for the murder. Chandan Mishra and Sheru Singh, both implicated in multiple high-profile crimes, including seven to eight murders in 2011 and the recent Tanishk jewelry heist in Ara, had a history of collaboration that soured into enmity. Krishnan noted that the murder appears to be a result of a turf war, with Sheru Singh’s gang seeking to eliminate Mishra to assert dominance in Bihar’s criminal landscape.

The police are also investigating the logistics of the attack, including who provided shelter, food, and transportation to the shooters in Patna. CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding areas is being analyzed to trace the assailants’ movements, and efforts are underway to identify accomplices who facilitated the operation. Krishnan emphasized that those who aided the shooters, knowingly or unknowingly, will face strict action.

Buxar Police’s Role: Local Suspects and Raids

Buxar Police have been instrumental in the investigation, conducting raids across the district to apprehend suspects linked to the murder. In addition to Monu Singh, three other individuals from Buxar—Bhakhan from Chilhari village, and two others from Belaur and Brahmpur—were detained for questioning. While police have described these detentions as part of routine inquiries, the focus remains on verifying their connections to the crime. Raids on the residences of known associates of Sheru Singh’s gang were conducted on Thursday night, though no significant breakthroughs were reported.

The sealing of the Bihar-Uttar Pradesh border and intensified vehicle checks reflect the urgency of the operation. Buxar Police’s proactive measures, combined with Patna Police’s SIT and Bihar STF’s collaboration with West Bengal authorities, demonstrate a multi-pronged approach to cracking the case.

High-Level Oversight and Ongoing Investigation

The Chandan Mishra murder case has drawn attention at the highest levels of Bihar’s police hierarchy. Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar personally reviewed the investigation on Friday, summoning Patna Inspector General (IG) Jitendra Rana and SSP Kartikey Sharma for a detailed briefing. The SIT, tasked with unraveling the conspiracy, is working round-the-clock to identify and apprehend the remaining shooters, with one or two still at large. The team is leveraging technical evidence, including mobile call records, CCTV footage, and forensic analysis, to build a watertight case.

ADG Krishnan emphasized that the investigation is exploring multiple angles, including gang warfare, personal vendettas, and possible hospital complicity. The involvement of criminals operating from jails in Gaya and Purulia has added complexity to the case, highlighting the challenge of tackling organized crime networks that operate across state borders and within correctional facilities.

The Broader Context: Bihar’s Battle Against Crime

The murder of Chandan Mishra underscores the persistent challenge of organized crime in Bihar, where gang rivalries and jail-based conspiracies continue to pose a threat to public safety. The brazen nature of the attack, executed in a high-security hospital ward, has raised concerns about the reach of criminal networks and the vulnerabilities in institutional security. The case also highlights the evolving dynamics of gang warfare, with former allies like Chandan Mishra and Sheru Singh turning into bitter rivals, leading to deadly consequences.

The involvement of figures like Amit Singh and Monu Singh, along with the arrests in West Bengal, points to a sprawling criminal ecosystem that spans multiple states. The police’s swift response, including border sealing, raids, and interstate collaboration, reflects a determination to dismantle these networks. However, the allegations against Paras Hospital and Dr. Pintu Kumar Singh have sparked a broader debate about accountability and security in private healthcare institutions.

A Case with Far-Reaching Implications

The Chandan Mishra murder case has evolved into one of Bihar’s most high-profile criminal investigations, with new revelations emerging daily. The identification of Monu Singh, the arrests in West Bengal, and the suspected involvement of Amit Singh and Sheru Singh have unraveled a complex conspiracy rooted in gang rivalries and jail-based plotting. The allegations against Paras Hospital add a layer of intrigue, raising questions about institutional lapses or collusion. As the SIT continues its probe, supported by Bihar and West Bengal police forces, the case is poised to expose the underbelly of organized crime in the region. For now, the focus remains on apprehending the remaining suspects and ensuring justice for a crime that has shaken Patna and beyond.
