SASARAM (RNI) Fishes breathing in jail, Sasaram Jail's model becomes an example! Clean water and technology partnership for the first time in Bihar's jails

Divisional Jail Sasaram has taken a technological initiative to give new life to fisheries in the pond located in the jail premises. It has become the first jail in Bihar to install an aerator to overcome the lack of oxygen in the pond - a device that creates a better environment for fishes and other aquatic organisms by increasing the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water.

According to Jail Superintendent Sujit Kumar Rai, earlier fishes used to die due to lack of oxygen in the pond. Now with the help of aerator, sufficient oxygen will be available in the water, which will improve the growth and health of the fishes. He said, “This is not just a technical measure but a major step towards jail reform and self-reliance.

Aerator is a mechanical device that increases the amount of dissolved oxygen in water by exposing it to air. It is especially used in fisheries where fish need clean and oxygenated water to survive.

“Aerator improves water quality, speeds up the growth of fish and makes the entire ecosystem of the pond healthy,” district fisheries officer Satyendra Ram said during the inauguration ceremony.

This initiative will not only promote fish farming in a scientific way, but will also provide vocational training in fish farming to the prisoners in jail. This can open new avenues of livelihood for them, which will help in their rehabilitation after coming out of jail.

Possibilities are being explored to adopt this scheme in other jails of Bihar as well. With this joint effort of the Fisheries Department and the Jail Administration, this model points towards a reformative and productive jail system.

The aerator was jointly inaugurated by Jail Superintendent Sujit Kumar Rai and District Fisheries Officer Satyendra Ram. On this occasion, Deputy Superintendent KK Jha, Assistant Superintendent Suresh Prasad, Nand Mohan, Ranjan Kumar, Sikesh Kumar, Guddu Giri and many other officers and employees were present.

This initiative of Sasaram Mandal Jail shows that jail reform is not limited to human behavior only, now it has also moved towards scientific techniques and self-reliance. This initiative will not only give life to the fish, but will also show the prisoners the way to the future.
