DELHI--------------------Senior leader Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, who has been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for a long time, was elected the 15th Vice President of the country on Tuesday. He is the third leader from Tamil Nadu to have achieved this highest constitutional post.
In the election, NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan got a total of 452 votes, while INDIA alliance candidate B. Sudarshan Reddy got 300 votes. In this way, Radhakrishnan won by a clear margin and created a wave of happiness in the NDA camp.
67-year-old Radhakrishnan is known for his gentle, friendly and non-confrontational image. He will replace former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who surprised everyone by suddenly resigning on July 21.
Radhakrishnan, who is deeply connected with Tamil Nadu politics and society, is addressed by his well-wishers as 'Pachai Tamizhan' (true Tamil). Before his nomination for the post of Vice President, he was serving as the Governor of Maharashtra.
Radhakrishnan's victory is not only being considered a big achievement for the BJP and the NDA, but is also being considered a step to strengthen the party's political hold in South India.
