ARA-------------------------India's freedom struggle was not limited to the efforts of a few prominent leaders, but every section of the society, especially the tribal communities, also contributed significantly to it. The struggle of the tribals against the British colonial rule was an indomitable and glorious battle to protect their traditional rights to 'water, forest, land'. The story of this struggle reminds us of the sacrifices of the unsung heroes who fought for their survival and identity.

The British rule dealt a severe blow to the traditional lifestyle of the tribals. They introduced new agricultural practices, which deprived the tribals of their land and livelihood. The exploitation by moneylenders and landlords made their condition even worse. The Forest Acts enacted by the British established the government's monopoly on forest land, thereby alienating the tribals from their forests, which were the basis of their life. These policies pushed them into the abyss of debt and bonded labour, breaking their social structures.

The Santhals of Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal waged a massive rebellion against the British and the zamindari system. Led by Sidhu and Kanhu Murmu, about 10,000 Santhals resolved to end the British rule completely.

However, the British brutally suppressed this rebellion, killing about 20,000 Santhals. This rebellion remained an important chapter in the history of India, which inspired future movements.

This rebellion of the Mundas of Chotanagpur is also known as the “Ulgulan Vidroha”, which means “great upheaval”. Led by Birsa Munda, the Mundas raised their voice against the oppression of moneylenders and the British government.

Birsa Munda urged people to stop paying debts and taxes and burned down police stations, zamindars’ houses and British property. Birsa Munda was captured and died in prison in 1900, but his struggle became a lasting inspiration for the rights of the tribals.

This rebellion took place under the leadership of Alluri Sitarama Raju in the Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts of present-day Andhra Pradesh. Alluri and his supporters attacked police stations, killed officers and stole weapons. He was captured and shot in 1924, ending the movement. The sacrifice of Alluri Sitarama Raju is still counted among the great heroes of India's freedom struggle.

These movements challenged British power and established a strong tradition of local resistance. This struggle of tribal communities reminds us that the story of India's independence was not limited to only a few prominent leaders, but it included the sacrifice of countless unsung heroes from every section of society. Their struggle inspires us to fight for our rights and protect our identity.
