A TRUE TEACHER IS THE ONE WHO CONNECTS WITH THE MIND AND HEART OF STUDENTS: RASHMI KUMARI

DELHI--------------------------Rashmi Kumari, a history teacher at Government Senior Girls School No. 2 Mubarakpur Delhi School, said during preparations for Teachers' Day on 5 September that a teacher is successful in his profession only when his students become eager to come to school just to meet him or to study from him. This situation arises when the teacher is concerned with the happiness and sorrows of his students and thinks for their betterment.

I cannot forget the day when I was posted as a guest teacher in July 2012 at Avantika School (1413030) of Delhi Government. I was relieved in just three months due to the appointment of a permanent teacher there. Then, the students of senior secondary level protested to put pressure on the Principal by blocking the road to stop my transfer. Seeing this affection of the students, I was more proud of my teaching skills and the emotional bond I had with the students than I was sad about my relieving. Then, the then Principal pacified the students by giving them false assurances that Rashmi Maam is leaving for a few days only.

This is the highest award a teacher can get that his students get so attached to his teaching and behaviour that they cannot accept separation from him. I am fortunate that more or less the same situation has been there in all my postings. But, achieving such a situation is not easy. In today's environment where student-teacher relations are facing many difficult situations, when we get to see and hear news of disputes between students and teachers every day, in such a situation, getting into the hearts of students and becoming their favourite is no less than a miracle. Such miracles happen when we understand the mental state of each of our students, their family's financial condition and problems and fulfill our responsibility towards their solution by connecting with them. When students start feeling that the teacher cares for them, then they will definitely connect with you. When students start seeing their parents in their teachers, then understand that you are a successful teacher. When your students come to their school just to meet you, then understand that you are a successful teacher. The biggest asset of a teacher is that his students remember him throughout their life. The greatest joy of a teacher is that the students educated by him become worthy citizens and a reason for pride of their family, society and nation. So, this time on Teachers' Day, let us pledge to spend all our energies in such efforts that our students join us and start orienting themselves towards their livelihood.
