Supreme Court Hearing Turns Heated: CJI Surya Kant Criticises ‘Social Media Activists’ During Senior Advocate Plea
A tense exchange unfolded in the Supreme Court on Friday when Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made sharp remarks while hearing a plea related to the designation of a Senior Advocate. During the proceedings, the CJI observed that many unemployed youngsters turn into social media and RTI activists and begin “attacking everyone.”
The bench, comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, was hearing a petition filed by a lawyer seeking Senior Advocate designation. Expressing strong displeasure, the court reportedly told the petitioner that “the entire world may be eligible to become senior advocate, but at least you are not entitled.”
The Chief Justice also warned that even if the Delhi High Court were to grant the designation, the Supreme Court would overturn such a decision. During the hearing, the bench referred to certain language allegedly used by the petitioner’s lawyer on Facebook and criticised what it described as attempts to join hands with “people who attack the system.”
CJI Surya Kant further remarked that there are already “parasites in society” targeting institutions and questioned why anyone would associate with such elements. The comments, made in open court, quickly drew attention for their strong tone and references to social media activism.
