Also known as Gopal Mukherjee or Gopal Patha, played an important role in protecting Hindus during the Direct Action Day in Bengal in 1946. The day was organized by the Muslim League demanding the partition of British India and the creation of Pakistan, which led to widespread violence and riots.
Gopal Patha led a resistance to protect Hindus. He converted his Indian ethnic corps into a defence force and began protecting Hindu settlements. His efforts helped secure Hindu areas and forced the rioters to retreat.
Gopal Patha did not follow Mahatma Gandhi's principle of non-violence and decided to take up arms. He called his wrestlers and gave them weapons. A Marwari businessman provided him financial help. Local blacksmiths made weapons overnight. Gopal Patha had weapons from World War II and American pistols. His strategy was that if one Hindu was killed, he would kill ten rioters. Gopal Patha's bravery and principle of power balance are relevant even today.
