Mamata Banerjee Leads Protest Against SIR 2.0, Warns of Political Fallout if Voters Are Removed

Kolkata (RNI) Stepping up her attack on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday led a massive protest march in Kolkata, accusing the BJP and the Election Commission of using the revision exercise as a political weapon to intimidate voters.

Addressing a large gathering after marching from Red Road to Jorasanko Thakurbari in north Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress chief issued a stern warning, declaring that she would ensure the fall of the BJP-led government at the Centre if even a single eligible voter was omitted from the electoral rolls.

“If one legitimate person is removed from the voter list, we will make sure to dismantle the BJP government at the Centre,” she asserted to loud cheers from supporters.

Ms. Banerjee alleged that the BJP was attempting to capture power by tampering with the voter list and removing genuine names. “These people think they can remove two crore names, deport people to Bangladesh, or move them to detention camps to seize power,” she said.

The Chief Minister’s protest coincided with the beginning of the door-to-door enumeration for SIR, during which officials from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office confirmed that around 16 lakh enumeration forms had already been distributed across the State. Senior Trinamool leaders, including party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, joined her in the march, which witnessed strong participation from party workers and supporters.

Raising sharp questions about the timing and intent of the revision, Mamata Banerjee asked, “After so many years of independence, do we still have to prove that we are Indians?”

She further pointed out the contradiction in the BJP’s stance on the voter list. “The BJP government was elected in 2024 using the same voter list which they now claim is full of illegal voters. How did you win the 2024 Lok Sabha elections then? If the list is faulty, your government is also faulty,” she remarked.

With this statement, Mamata Banerjee once again positioned herself as a fierce opponent of what she termed the BJP’s “divisive agenda,” while calling on citizens to remain vigilant as the SIR process unfolds across West Bengal.
