PATNA--------------------------Police lathicharged ration dealers protesting for their demands in Patna today. The incident took place when thousands of ration dealers under the banner of 'Fair Price Dealers Association' reached Gandhi Maidan demanding permanent employment.
Police first used water cannon to disperse the protesters, but when they did not move, police had to resort to lathicharge. The lathicharge took place at Daldali Chauraha near Gandhi Maidan.
The padayatra led by the association started from Gandhi Ashram, Bhitiharwa in West Champaran on August 9 and reached Patna today.
The dealers allege that the government gave them repeated assurances, but did not take any concrete steps to meet their demands. Their main demand is that all vendors associated with the public distribution system should be made permanent and given pay scales so that their livelihood can be secured.
