DELHI------------------------Indian Railways has taken a big step giving top priority to the safety of passengers. Now CCTV cameras will be installed in all 74,000 passenger coaches and 15,000 engines, to make train travel more secure. This decision has been taken after the successful experimental results of installing CCTV cameras in the coaches.
Railways has informed that 4 dome CCTV cameras will be installed in each passenger coach, out of which 2 will be at each entrance. At the same time, the locomotive (engine) will have 6 CCTV cameras, including 1 camera each at the front, rear and both sides. Apart from this, 1 dome CCTV camera will also be installed in each cab (front and rear) and 2 microphones on the desk, which will ensure 360-degree comprehensive coverage.
Union Minister of Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister of State for Railways Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu reviewed the progress of installation of CCTV cameras in engines and coaches in a high-level meeting on 12th July 2025. Senior officials of Railway Board were also present in the meeting.
The Railway Minister directed the officials that the CCTV cameras should be of latest standards and STQC certified. He laid special emphasis on providing high quality footage even at speeds of over 100 kmph and in low light conditions. Shri Vaishnaw also encouraged the officials to explore the possibility of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the data captured by CCTV cameras in collaboration with IndiaAI Mission.
Railway officials have clarified that CCTV cameras will be installed in general movement areas near the doors, so that the privacy of passengers is maintained. The main objective of these cameras is to enhance passenger safety and identify mischievous elements and organized gangs who take advantage of naïve passengers.
This modernization effort of Indian Railways reflects its commitment to provide safe, secure and passenger-friendly travel experience. This initiative will definitely prove helpful in curbing crimes in trains.
