The shoddy healthcare system at the Brahmapur Community Health Center was once again exposed when, on Tuesday, Yashoda Devi, a resident of Nainijor village, was brought to the hospital in critical condition but was unable to provide even her life-saving needs. This incident is not just a patient's plight, but a reflection of the system's inertia, which has shaken trust in the government health system in rural areas.
According to reports, Yashoda Devi's family brought her to the hospital at 4 p.m. after she experienced severe breathing problems. However, due to basic deficiencies such as power outages, a malfunctioning generator, and empty oxygen cylinders, her treatment could not begin. The patient waited on a stretcher for nearly an hour, while her family pleaded with the doctors for help. The doctors on duty stated clearly that they were unable to begin treatment immediately due to inadequate resources. Seeing her condition worsen, a decision was made to refer the patient, but the tragedy continued: even after the referral, the ambulance arrived nearly an hour late. During this time, the family and other patients continued to express their anger on the hospital premises, questioning the health system. Information about the incident reached Civil Surgeon Dr. Shiv Prasad Chakraborty on Wednesday morning. He described it as serious negligence and stated that an explanation had been sought from the hospital administration. An investigation team has been formed to investigate the mismanagement and the role of the responsible staff. He assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits. This incident once again exposes the reality of the rural health system, where lack of facilities sometimes puts the lives of patients at risk.
