DELHI-------------------------PM Narendra Modi had said this during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. At that time, he had accused the Election Commission of colluding with the government and said that due to the inaction of the Commission, booths are looted in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. He said that elections should be fair.
This was the election when the Election Commission had lodged an FIR against PM Modi for the last time. The reason was that just a day before the elections, Modi appeared before the press with the election symbol of lotus. The Commission believed that the content and tone of his press conference was like election campaign. On this basis, the Commission had also ordered to register an FIR against the TV channels that broadcast that speech.
The elections were held and the BJP won with a huge majority. But I do not remember that when Narendra Modi was questioning the Election Commission of the country, the spokespersons of the ruling Congress ever defended the Commission. Look today, instead of the Commission, the spokespersons of the government are coming forward to answer the questions being raised on the Election Commission.
Now someone can say that Rahul Gandhi is directly accusing the Election Commission of benefiting the BJP, so why should the BJP not respond? Of course they should respond – but only to their part. Because the Election Commission is not a government institution, but an independent constitutional body. The Chief Election Commissioner of the country is capable of proving the fairness of his institution and the electoral process.
The BJP should request the Election Commission to come forward and respond to the allegations against it and the Commission. This will be the most appropriate response from the BJP. Because it took six months to collect the facts on the basis of which Rahul Gandhi is making allegations. In such a situation, the BJP will have to collect solid data to respond to these figures, which is a time-consuming task.
