DELHI-------------------------Nepal is currently going through a period of severe political and social turmoil. The violence that erupted recently even engulfed the family of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal. The protesters set fire to Khanal's Kathmandu residence, in which his wife Rajlakshmi Chitrakar was badly burnt and died during treatment.
This incident is not just the tragedy of a family, but the horrific face of the anarchy in Nepal.
The decision of the Nepal government to ban social media platforms had already become a spark of anger among the public. Youth fed up with unemployment, corruption and dynastic politics took to the streets. Gradually this anger turned into a violent mob.
The protesters attacked the Parliament, court and government buildings. Many important places including Singha Durbar were set on fire. In the heat of these incidents, former PM Khanal's house also burned to ashes.
According to local reports, Rajlakshmi Chitrakar could not escape from the fire. After being severely burnt, she was taken to the hospital, but the doctors could not save her. This incident has shaken the people of Nepal.
The violence continued to increase instead of stopping. Seeing the situation going out of control, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned. This resignation proves that public anger is now capable of challenging any political system.
India has also expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in Nepal. The Indian government has advised its citizens to be alert. At the same time, the question is being raised at the international level that in which direction is Nepal's democratic system going.
This uproar in Nepal is not just a protest movement, but a symbol of the anger of the new generation. The protest that started against the social media ban has now taken the form of political instability and anti-government mass movement.
This incident shows that Nepal is now standing at a decisive turning point – where either the voice of the public will be heard, or anarchy and violence will deepen.
