PATNA-----------------------The troubles of Vinod Kumar Rai, the superintending engineer of Bihar's Rural Works Department, are increasing continuously. The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) has registered a case of disproportionate assets against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Recently, raids were conducted at his residence in Patna and two places in Samastipur, from where the investigation team got many important evidence. In this action, it was revealed that engineer Rai has built immense property in his name and the name of family members.

EOU investigation has revealed that Vinod Rai has bought flats in Patna, Danapur and Kota. At the same time, two office spaces in Noida of NCR region, several plots in Ghaziabad, Phulwari and Sonpur have also been found in his name. Apart from this, more than two dozen properties have been found in the name of his wife Babli Rai, daughter Priya Rai and son Abhishek Rai in Rosda area of Samastipur district. These include residential and agricultural land as well as developing and leased properties.

Not only this, Rai also invested a large part of his illegal earnings in the construction companies of contractors. The investigation also revealed that he had also invested capital in 'Jeeva Construction Company' formed in the name of his brother-in-law and brother-in-law. This company was actually a means to spend his black money.

On August 22, the EOU team took a major action at his house in Patna. During this raid, Rs 39 lakh in cash was recovered. A large amount of burnt notes were also found inside the house, which made the whole matter more sensational. During interrogation, it was revealed that Engineer Rai and his wife set the notes on fire the whole night as soon as they got the inkling of the EOU action.

In fact, while posted as a superintending engineer in Sitamarhi, Vinod Rai was coming to Patna with a huge amount of cash in his vehicle. The EOU had received secret information in this regard. The team reached his house at night, but at that time Rai's wife refused to open the door and wasted time by saying that she was alone. Meanwhile, the couple together burnt notes worth lakhs of rupees. In the morning, when the EOU team reached inside the house, they were shocked to see a pile of burnt notes.

Officials say that this is one of the most shocking cases till date, because not only did it reveal a web of illegal property, but also exposed the attempt to destroy evidence. At present, Vinod Kumar Rai has been arrested and a thorough investigation of his properties is going on. It is believed that there may be more big revelations in the investigation, which will expose the depth of corruption prevalent in the government system.
