PATNA----------------------------In Indian politics, the significance of elections serves as the cornerstone of a robust democracy. In our country, elections are conducted periodically at various levels to ensure the formulation of pro-people policies and to enable the voice of the public to reach the legislative chambers. However, in recent times, a new debate has erupted within political circles regarding the elections for MLCs (Members of the Legislative Council). Rahul Tiwari, the former MLA from the Shahpur Assembly constituency in Bhojpur district, has expressed his strong views on this subject, raising a pertinent and serious question. His statement is not only politically significant but also presents a compelling issue for consideration in the context of electoral reform.

In his statement, former MLA Rahul Tiwari explicitly asserted that the practice of holding MLC elections should now be discontinued, as it imposes an unnecessary burden upon the public. He argues that, in the current scenario, the relevance of these elections is diminishing, and they no longer appear to serve the interests of the common citizen in any meaningful way. He emphasized that such electoral processes are casting a negative shadow on the public image of politicians—a situation that is entirely detrimental to the democratic framework.

According to Tiwari, the most glaring anomaly in the current MLC election system is the conspicuous presence and active participation of individuals possessing a "strongman" (Bahubali) or domineering public image. Expressing his concern, he noted that these elections have evolved into a platform where individuals hailing from affluent backgrounds or those with an aggressive, domineering disposition can easily secure their entry into the legislature. Consequently, it has become exceedingly difficult for the common man—or for honest politicians dedicated to grassroots public service—to gain access to the legislative chambers.

Drawing upon historical context, the former MLA further observed that these electoral regulations likely date back to the British colonial era. He argued that systems established during the colonial epoch are ill-suited to address the challenges of the contemporary world. In the modern India of today, we require an electoral system that is transparent—one in which only individuals who are truly qualified and genuinely dedicated to public service can secure a place. He emphasized that policymakers must give serious consideration to this matter and determine whether these elections truly serve the public or merely act as a means to perpetuate the dominance of a select few and the influential elite.

It is Rahul Tiwari's firm conviction that, as a result of MLC elections, wealthy businessmen and individuals wielding financial power are gaining entry into the House—individuals who are often completely out of touch with the problems faced by the common people. When the influence of strongmen and muscle power grows within the House, the fundamental issues affecting the general public are relegated to the background.
