DELHI----------------------------The death of a 19-year-old woman under suspicious circumstances at the Charkhi Pahari Remand Home, located in Jharkhand's Deoghar district, has raised serious questions regarding the state's law and order situation and the security protocols within its correctional facilities. Given the gravity of the matter, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken *suo motu* (on its own initiative) cognizance of the case.

The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Jharkhand government and the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Deoghar, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The Commission has stated that if the facts presented in media reports are accurate, this constitutes an extremely serious case of human rights violation.

According to media reports, the health of the young woman residing at the remand home deteriorated suddenly on May 2, 2026. Staff members at the remand home rushed her to the Deoghar Sadar Hospital, where she passed away while undergoing treatment. The exact cause of the young woman's death remains unknown at this time.

This incident has placed the management of the remand home in the dock. It is reported that a total of five inmates have died at this remand home since January 1, 2026. The occurrence of five deaths within such a short span of time has cast a deep shadow of doubt over the facility's security, healthcare infrastructure, and administrative oversight.

It now remains to be seen what causes for these deaths the state administration cites in the report submitted to the Commission, and what corrective measures are implemented to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
