All the women arrested used to take advantage of the crowds in shops during the festive season to steal clothes. This had been going on for a long time, but on Saturday they were caught red-handed.
It is being reported that this gang had stolen clothes worth lakhs of rupees from various shops in the Rajpur, Tiara, and Chausa areas over the past week. On Saturday, five women members of a gang arrived at a shop in Chausa Bazaar, intending to steal, when a cloth merchant from Akhouripur Gola recognized them. After the merchant raised an alarm, some women present at the scene caught the thieves and beat them severely. The shopkeepers then informed the police by calling 112. Upon receiving the information, the police team detained all of them. Upon learning of the incident, Manish Kumar, a cloth merchant from Rajpur, went to the police station and confirmed the previous theft by showing CCTV footage. Police stated that the women members of the gang stole clothes from shops in crowded areas and, after stealing, attempted to sell them at various locations. Station Officer Shambhu Bhagat stated that the arrested women have confessed to the thefts, and efforts are underway to recover the stolen clothes.
The arrested accused have been identified as Munni Devi, wife of the late Kumar, Pushpa Devi, wife of Jitendra Bind, Anjali Devi, wife of Sintu Bind, and Rachli Devi, wife of Vikrama Bind. All are residents of Nai Bazaar under the Sakaldiha police station area of Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh. Rinku Devi and Nakhadu Rajbhar are said to be residents of Tiari village under the Zamania police station area of Uttar Pradesh.
Police say this gang is often active during festivals and crowded market days, forming groups and stealing clothes by eluding shopkeepers. Interrogation of all the arrested accused is ongoing, and a search is underway for their other accomplices.
