NEW DELHI (RNI) The harsh and cold terrain of Ladakh, India, gave birth to a personality who blazed a new trail in the field of education and the environment. This personality is Sonam Wangchuk, whom the world recognizes today as a symbol of innovation and sustainable development.
Sonam Wangchuk was born on September 1, 1966, in Ladakh. From childhood, he faced difficult circumstances. The lack of English education and the absence of education in the local language led to his own educational challenges. This experience later inspired his efforts to reform education.
In 1988, he founded SECMOL (Student's Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh). This organization brought hope to students who were considered "failures" and excluded from education. Wangchuk provided education to Ladakhi children based on their culture and mother tongue, emphasizing practical knowledge.
Ladakh farmers struggled with water shortages during the summer. Wangchuk solved this problem with the Ice Stupa technique. In this, winter snow is stored in a conical shape, which gradually melts in the summer and is used for agriculture and drinking water. This innovation has become a boon for areas affected by climate change.
In 2018, he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award. He has been honored by numerous organizations in India and abroad as an environmental protector and education reformer. The character "Rancho" in Aamir Khan's film "Three Idiots" is also believed to have inspired him.
Sonam Wangchuk has today become the voice of not only Ladakh but the entire Himalayan region. He is campaigning for climate change, sustainable development, and the protection of local culture. Recently, he attracted global attention by undertaking a climate fast. He believes that if the Himalayas survive, the future of India and Asia will be secure.
Sonam Wangchuk has proven that even one person can change the direction of society through the power of education, science, and the environment. He is an inspiration not only for Ladakh but for the entire world.
