PATNA-------------------------The situation at the Nursing College within the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna is spiraling out of control. The protest by nursing students at the institute's main gate has continued into its third day, effectively bringing the entire hospital complex to a standstill. Ambulance movement has halted, doctors' entry is obstructed, and patients are facing severe hardships. The students allege that the college administration—specifically Principal Anuja Daniel and Vice Principal Rupashree Dasgupta—subjects them to constant mistreatment, mental harassment, and the use of derogatory language. The protesting students further claim that they are deliberately failed in examinations and that there is arbitrariness regarding the allocation of internal assessment marks. At the protest site, students sit holding placards bearing slogans such as "This is a college, not a brothel," "Stop the mental harassment," and "We want justice." This outcry has now escalated into a grave institutional crisis. The students allege that, for the past several months, an atmosphere of fear and intimidation has prevailed within the institution. They claim they were threatened with adverse academic consequences if they dared to protest—a tactic that previously prevented them from speaking out openly. One student, speaking emotionally, remarked that the mental stress here far outweighs the academic focus, noting that many students have slipped into depression.
According to sources, some students had previously lodged complaints, and an inquiry committee was subsequently constituted; however, to this day, no action has been taken based on that report. Due to this inaction, the pent-up anger has now spilled out onto the streets. During the protest, students alleged that they were subjected to psychological breakdown through the deliberate issuance of failing grades on multiple occasions—a tactic that, in some instances, led to severe repercussions. These allegations cast a serious shadow over the institution's credibility. Although approximately 450 students staged a protest within the campus on Thursday, the movement—which began on Wednesday—has now shifted its entire focus to the main entrance.
The situation has reached a point where the hospital's main entrance is completely blocked. Patients, doctors, and staff members alike are being affected, and even emergency services are facing disruption. To date, the administration has failed to offer any concrete solution or initiate a dialogue to resolve the crisis.
The students have categorically stated that their agitation will not cease until strict disciplinary action is taken against the Principal and the Vice-Principal. What began as a mere college dispute has now evolved into a critical issue concerning institutional accountability and student safety.
