BHABHUA----------------------------Amidst rising cases of cybercrime, the Kaimur Police launched an awareness campaign to protect the public from online fraud. Under the Bihar Police's cyber awareness program, events are being organized across various areas of the district to educate the general public on how to stay safe from cybercrime. As part of this initiative, Cyber DSP Neetu Kumari conducted awareness programs at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel College in Bhabua and Hata Panchayat, educating villagers, women, female teachers, and 'Jivika Didis' (members of women's self-help groups) about cyber fraud.
A large number of rural men and women attended the event. Addressing the gathering, the Cyber DSP noted that cybercriminals are currently employing various tactics to ensnare people in their traps. Many individuals, particularly in rural areas, fall victim to fraud due to a lack of adequate information regarding cybercrime. In such a scenario, awareness serves as the most effective tool for protection against cybercrime.
The Cyber DSP explained that cyber fraudsters often call while posing as bank officials, police officers, relatives, or employees of government departments. Additionally, attempts are made to obtain confidential information by sending fake links to mobile phones, enticing people with promises of rewards or lottery winnings, or using pretexts like KYC updates or threats of bank account closure.
She emphasized that one should not trust phone calls, messages, or WhatsApp communications from unknown individuals. Under no circumstances should one share OTPs, ATM or debit card details, bank account information, UPI PINs, passwords, or personal documents with strangers. She further clarified that banks and responsible government institutions never ask for OTPs or UPI PINs over the phone. During the program, people were advised to avoid clicking on unknown links and to immediately delete suspicious messages, emails, or links received on their mobile phones. They were also warned against downloading screen-sharing or remote access apps at anyone's behest, as cybercriminals can exploit these tools to gain access to sensitive mobile and banking information.
The Cyber DSP stated that if someone falls victim to cyber fraud, they should report it immediately rather than panicking. Prompt reporting increases the likelihood of swift action. He urged people to register a complaint with the relevant helpline and contact the nearest police station or cyber police station if they become victims of cyber fraud.
During the awareness program, 'Jeevika Didis' (members of women's self-help groups), women, teachers, and villagers asked questions regarding cybercrime. Police officials addressed their concerns and advised them to exercise caution to ensure safe digital transactions.
Meanwhile, Ramesh, the Chairperson of Hata Nagar Panchayat, commended the cyber awareness campaign. He stated that cybercrime is no longer confined to cities; such cases are increasingly being reported from rural areas as well. In this context, the Cyber DSP’s initiative to personally visit villages and raise public awareness is highly commendable. He emphasized that such programs should be organized regularly to keep the general public informed about the evolving tactics used by cybercriminals.
The police urged people to exercise caution while using digital services. They advised against sharing banking details with strangers and asked citizens to immediately report any suspicious activity to the police. Staying vigilant is the only way to avoid falling prey to cybercriminals.
