MESSAGE TO CHINA THROUGH CARTOGRAPHIC DIPLOMACY:MAHENDRA TIWARI

The official mapping of 27 locations in Arunachal Pradesh—assigning them standardized Indian names via the Survey of India—is not merely an administrative formality; it is part of a profound strategic diplomatic move. This step holds particular significance in the context of the long-standing border dispute between India and China. China has frequently engaged in renaming locations in Arunachal Pradesh—territory it claims illegally—as part of its expansionist policies. In response, India has officially recorded 21 land features, 4 mountain passes, 1 lake, and 1 monument on its maps, sending a clear message that no external interference or pressure regarding sovereignty over Indian territory will be tolerated. This move demonstrates that the standardization of geographical locations has become a highly effective tool of modern diplomacy.

ARA-------------------------The official mapping of 27 locations in Arunachal Pradesh—assigning them standardized Indian names via the Survey of India—is not merely an administrative formality; it is part of a profound strategic diplomatic move.

Alongside this firm administrative stance, India has kept the channels of diplomatic dialogue fully open, reflecting its mature foreign policy. The 36th meeting of the 'Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs,' held in New Delhi on August 6, 2026, serves as tangible and significant proof of this. During the meeting, both nations reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and continuing dialogue at both military and diplomatic levels. India’s strategy clearly demonstrates its unwavering resolve to protect its borders and national sovereignty; however, it also fully recognizes that a direct confrontation between two major Asian powers could destabilize the geopolitics and economy of the entire region. Therefore, keeping the dialogue mechanism active is crucial to preventing any misunderstandings along the border.

Beyond the border dispute, the management of Himalayan rivers and water security constitutes another critical and sensitive issue between the two neighboring nations. Massive rivers like the Brahmaputra originate in the Tibetan region and flow directly into India's northeastern states. Large dams and hydroelectric projects being constructed by China on the upper reaches of these rivers pose a looming threat of unexpected floods or water crises in the downstream Indian regions. India has placed great emphasis on the timely receipt of, and transparency regarding, technical data related to water flow—factors essential for disaster management and broader human security. Concurrently, the Government of India is rapidly developing infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh and other northern border states under the 'Vibrant Villages Programme.' Residents of border villages are being empowered through the provision of paved roads, communication networks, and electricity.

Viewed from a broader perspective, this official mapping of 27 locations—and the associated diplomatic activities—forms a crucial part of India's well-considered strategy, characterized by firmness, continuous dialogue, and extreme caution. While India is categorically rejecting any unilateral renaming policy by China through the strengthening of its own administrative records and maps, it is simultaneously making serious efforts to avert any sudden border tensions through negotiations. Although this balanced approach offers no immediate guarantee that the complex border dispute will be resolved overnight, it certainly underscores India's commitment to peaceful coexistence. Without yielding to external pressure, India is steadfastly pursuing a long-term, highly pragmatic diplomatic policy to safeguard its national interests and territorial integrity. This initiative by the Survey of India has set new benchmarks in border management.
