ARA---------------------------Ara, Bihar. Political activity has intensified regarding the Bhojpur-Buxar Local Authorities MLC by-election. Both major alliances—the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance)—have announced their respective candidates, thereby clarifying the contours of this election. This by-election is not merely a battle for political supremacy; it has also evolved into a direct contest between the legacies of two former Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs).
Representing the Mahagathbandhan, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has fielded Sonu Kumar Rai—son of former MLC Lal Das Rai and a prominent youth leader within the party—as its candidate. Conversely, from the NDA camp, the Janata Dal (United) has placed its trust in Kanhaiya Prasad—son of former MLC and current MLA for Sandesh, Radha Charan Sah—and has fielded him in the electoral fray. Following the announcement of the candidates' names, political discussions and debates have begun to dominate the discourse in the region.
The electoral history of this seat is quite intriguing. The first election for this seat was held in 2003, in which Lal Das Rai secured a victory on an RJD ticket. However, in the 2009 election, he suffered a defeat at the hands of Hulas Pandey. Subsequently, in the 2015 election, Radha Charan Sah emerged victorious while contesting on an RJD ticket. Radha Charan Sah not only achieved success in 2015 but also retained the seat for a second consecutive term in the 2022 election, defeating the RJD candidate, Anil Samrat.
Currently, this by-election is being held to fill the vacancy created after Radha Charan Sah was elected as the MLA for the Sandesh Assembly constituency. Political analysts believe that the primary contest in this election will remain centered between the candidates fielded by these two major alliances. As there is currently no discussion regarding a third major candidate, the battle has effectively narrowed down to a direct face-off between two families and two distinct ideologies.
While this by-election serves as an opportunity for young leaders to establish their political identities, it also stands as a trial by fire for both major alliances to consolidate their influence and strengthen their foothold within the region. A series of meetings among party workers is underway; however, the role of local body representatives will prove decisive in determining the outcome.
