CJP Announces October 10 Jantar Mantar Protest If Gyanesh Kumar Does Not Resign
New Delhi. The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has announced a fresh protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10 if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign. CJP convenor Abhijit Dipke said supporters from across the country would march to the national capital to raise concerns over electoral rolls and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
Dipke made the announcement after the CJP held a protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2. In a post on X, he said that supporters would gather at Jantar Mantar on October 10 if Kumar did not step down. He described the proposed demonstration as a peaceful protest and appealed to citizens who support what the CJP describes as free and fair elections to participate.
Dipke also said that the government and Delhi Police would have to decide whether to respect the protesters’ right to peaceful assembly or take action against them. He said that if police stopped the protesters before they reached Jantar Mantar, the location where they were stopped would become their protest site.
The CJP has raised several demands concerning the electoral process. These include changes to the SIR exercise, freezing the 2025 voter lists and changes to the law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners. The party has also demanded Kumar’s resignation and criminal proceedings against him, alleging irregularities in the electoral-roll revision process. These allegations are claims made by the CJP and remain contested.
The October 10 announcement comes amid a wider series of protests over SIR and the functioning of the Election Commission. The proposed demonstration would take the CJP’s campaign from Mumbai to Delhi, with Dipke calling on supporters from across India to participate.
