PROTECTING BOTH THE FREEDOM TO PROTECT AND THE LIVELIHOODS OF TRADERS IS ESSENTIAL:DEVANAND SINGH
-In a democracy, the voice of dissent cannot be suppressed; however, it is equally inappropriate to jeopardize the lives of the general public or the livelihoods of traders in the name of protest. The Delhi High Court’s approach regarding the protest planned for October 16 by the 'Cockroach Janta Party' (CoJaPa) at Central Park in Connaught Place, Delhi, brings this very issue to the fore. While the court declined to stay the protest, it provided the police with the opportunity to fulfill their responsibilities by ensuring that the activities are controlled and well-organized.

ARA-----------------------------In a democracy, the voice of dissent cannot be suppressed; however, it is equally inappropriate to jeopardize the lives of the general public or the livelihoods of traders in the name of protest.
During the festive season, the vibrancy of the markets brings hope to traders. If, during such a period, protests lead to the closure of shops, hinder the movement of customers, and bring business to a standstill, the loss is not borne solely by the shopkeepers—it also affects their employees and their families. Therefore, the concerns of the traders cannot be overlooked.
On the other hand, peaceful protest is a vital right of citizens in a democracy. It would be unjust to suppress an organization’s voice simply because one disagrees with its demands or finds them inconvenient. The goal should be to allow for protests while maintaining law and order, ensuring that ordinary citizens are not subjected to undue hardship.
Abhijeet Deepke, the founder of CoJaPa, has urged his supporters to gather at Connaught Place, carrying the national flag. This call was issued following the remand of two party members to judicial custody. In this matter, the allegations and subsequent legal actions must be evaluated based on facts, rather than merely on emotions or political claims.
The primary responsibility now lies with the Delhi Police. They must ensure arrangements are in place so that the protest remains peaceful, traffic is not disrupted, and traders do not suffer unnecessary financial losses. The success of the administration lies not in preventing protests, but in protecting the rights of all parties while operating within the framework of the law.
Editorial Conclusion: Dissent is a strength of democracy, but responsibility is the boundary that defines its decorum. Protesters must respect the rights of others alongside their own. Meanwhile, the administration must act impartially, remaining mindful of the livelihoods of business owners and the convenience of the general public. Democracy is strengthened only when voices of dissent are heard without disrupting the lives of the common people.
