PATNA-----------------------------The Central Government has announced a significant gift for Bihar. Workers employed under the MGNREGA Act (formerly the MGNREGA scheme) will now receive wages at a rate of ₹300 per day, up from the previously fixed ₹255 per day. The Central Government implemented this change following a proposal and appeal made by Mr. Shravan Kumar—the Minister for Rural Development and Information & Public Relations—during a recent two-day national rural development conference held in New Delhi.

Minister Kumar stated that the wage rate under the MGNREGA Act for a state like Bihar was previously set at ₹255. During the 'Gramoday se Rashtroday' (Village-to-Nation Upliftment) event held in New Delhi on June 28 and 29, an appeal was made to the Union Minister for Rural Development, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, to standardize wage rates across all states. Taking this appeal seriously, the Central Government accepted the proposal, and the daily wage for laborers working under the scheme in Bihar has now been fixed at ₹300. However, there are still several states where wage rates are higher than those in Bihar. Under this initiative, daily wage rates have been set at ₹400 for Haryana, ₹346 for Kerala, ₹356 for Goa, ₹349 for Karnataka, and ₹322 for Punjab.

In a statement, Minister Mr. Kumar extended his heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the Central Government for increasing wages under the scheme. He remarked that raising wage rates for workers would strengthen the rural economy, alleviate rural poverty, and improve the workers' standard of living. Minister Mr. Kumar noted that the increase in workers' purchasing power would generate demand in local markets, directly benefiting the rural economy. According to him, a major advantage of this new scheme would be a reduction in migration from states like Bihar; curbing the migration of rural workers to cities would help free them from the debt trap.
