PATNA--------------------------To equip the Bihar Police with state-of-the-art weaponry, pistols and ammunition will be procured at a cost running into crores of rupees; this initiative aims to significantly bolster the police force's capabilities in maintaining law and order and controlling crime.
Criminal activity in Bihar has reached a critical peak, with offenders committing one crime after another in rapid succession. In response, continuous operations are being conducted to rein in these criminals. As part of these efforts, a major step has been taken to modernize the police force through technology. According to reports, the Nitish government has approved the procurement of pistols and ammunition—at an estimated cost of ₹43.42 crore—to provide police personnel with cutting-edge weaponry.
The Home Department has formally approved the proposal submitted by the Bihar Police Headquarters. Consequently, the procurement process for these weapons is set to commence immediately. This move is expected to enhance both the operational efficiency and the overall security infrastructure of the police force. With the induction of these new weapons, the police will become even more technologically advanced, and the pace of action taken against criminals will accelerate.
According to departmental sources, 9mm semi-automatic pistols will be procured from the Ishapore Rifle Factory. A total of 4,000 pistols will be acquired in two phases: the first phase will involve the procurement of 2,500 units, while the second phase will cover the remaining 1,500 units. Approximately ₹42.28 crore will be spent on this procurement.
Arrangements are also being made to procure special "blank" rounds for the training of police personnel. An estimated ₹1 crore will be allocated for this purpose. Specifically, 60,000 blank rounds of 7.62mm caliber will be sourced from the Khadki Factory in Pune, while another 60,000 blank rounds of 5.56mm caliber will be procured from the factory in Varangaon.
Blank rounds are utilized specifically for training purposes. Unlike live ammunition, they do not contain an actual projectile; instead, they consist solely of gunpowder and a paper or plastic wad, designed to simulate the sound and recoil experienced during live firing. This initiative will effectively enable the Bihar Police to be fully equipped with modern weaponry. As a result, the police's role in crime control and maintaining law and order is expected to become even more effective.
