Hospital Event in Delhi: Two Women Journalists Allege Assault by Police After Being Detained

New Delhi. Two women journalists in Delhi have alleged that they were detained and physically assaulted by Delhi Police personnel while covering a news event in South Delhi on Thursday. The allegations have not been independently verified, and Delhi Police had not issued a response to the claims at the time of reporting.

Dinesh Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Saket Police Station, declined to comment when contacted by Newslaundry.

A video posted on social media by 4PM News Network shows journalist Shaheen Khan at a police station, where she alleges that she was physically assaulted and subjected to mental harassment. In the video, she also points to injury marks on the body of a woman colleague.

According to a post published by 4PM News Network, Shaheen Khan was attempting to ask Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta a question when police personnel allegedly intervened and took her to the police station. The news network claimed that she was beaten while being taken into custody and further alleged that the assault intensified after police personnel heard her surname, “Khan.”

The news network also suggested that the alleged incident could be connected to Shaheen Khan’s work as a journalist.

Another journalist, Nafisa Khan, was also reportedly assaulted, according to the report. A person associated with the two journalists told Newslaundry that the incident took place during the inauguration of a new building at Saket Max Hospital, where the journalists had gone to cover the event.

Both journalists were reportedly taken into custody from the hospital premises. The allegations have raised concerns over the treatment of journalists while covering public events, although the circumstances surrounding the incident and the actions of the police remain subject to further investigation and the Delhi Police's response.
