ARA------------------------------Work on the upgradation and modernization of the historic Koilwar rail-cum-road bridge (Abdul Bari Bridge)—located over the Son River between Bihta and Koilwar stations on the Howrah-Delhi main railway line of the Danapur Railway Division—is progressing rapidly. Built during British rule in 1862, this bridge remains a vital link for both rail and road traffic to this day.
This double-decker bridge, spanning approximately 1.44 kilometers, connects the Bhojpur region of Bihar to the capital, Patna. Railway tracks run along the upper deck, while road traffic operates on the lower deck. High-quality wrought iron was used during its construction, ensuring that its pillars remain robust and sturdy even today.
According to railway officials, round-the-clock patrolling is conducted to ensure the bridge's safety and structural integrity. Additionally, a 'key-man' inspects its fittings and other technical aspects on a daily basis. Connecting the two banks of the Son River, this bridge is not only crucial for transportation but also stands as a symbol of Bihar's historical and engineering heritage.
Construction reportedly began in 1856 but was delayed due to the Revolt of 1857. Later, in 1862, the then Viceroy of India, Lord Elgin, inaugurated the bridge. Designed by James Meadows Rendel and Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt, it was considered the longest bridge in Asia at the time. It is also India's oldest operational rail-cum-road bridge. The bridge was prominently featured in the 1982 Oscar-winning film "Gandhi."
Currently, the Railways is undertaking several significant tasks, including the installation of new-design H-beam sleepers, the replacement of checker plates, and the painting of girders. Officials state that once the upgrade work is completed, this historic bridge will remain safe and fully functional for several decades to come.
