DELHI--------------------------Under the delimitation exercise to be conducted following the census, there is a proposal to increase the total number of Lok Sabha MPs in India from 543 to 816. With a total of 816 seats, any single party or coalition would require 409 MPs to form the government. Of these 816 seats, 273 are proposed to be reserved for women.
On a state-wise basis, the number of seats in Uttar Pradesh is set to rise from 80 to 120, and in Bihar, from 40 to 60. It is projected that Maharashtra's tally will increase from 48 to 72; West Bengal's from 42 to 63; Delhi's from 7 to 11; Jammu and Kashmir's from 5 to 8; and Madhya Pradesh's from 29 to 44. Tamil Nadu's representation is expected to rise from 39 to 59, and Kerala's from 20 to 30. In essence, the number of MPs in every state is expected to increase by approximately 50%. However, when analyzing the distribution between the North and the South, while North India is set to gain 200 additional seats, South India is projected to gain only 66 seats.
