The victim's family reported that a few months ago, he had been issued an online challan for ₹9,000, which he had paid. On Saturday, he was issued another online challan for ₹7,000. Angered by this, he parked his auto at the Police Lines, poured petrol from his own auto on himself, and set himself on fire. However, the fire was immediately extinguished by other auto drivers present there and he was brought to Sadar Hospital for treatment.
