Kolkata Fire Department Issues Notices to Three Durga Puja Committees Over Safety Lapses

Kolkata: The West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Department has issued notices to three prominent Durga Puja committees in south Kolkata over alleged shortcomings in fire safety arrangements. The action follows a stampede at the Chorbagan pandal that reportedly claimed 19 lives.

According to officials, a high-level fire services team inspected major puja pandals and identified deficiencies in their safety arrangements. Notices were issued to Chetla Agrani, Ballygunge Cultural Association and Tridhara Sammilani.

The department has also directed the immediate removal of unauthorised temporary commercial structures and hazardous stalls near the pandals. Officials expressed concern over LPG cylinders being kept near structures made of highly inflammable materials, warning that such arrangements could increase the risk of fire.

During the inspections, authorities stressed the need for adequate lighting and ventilation inside the pandals. They also recommended sufficient fans and air-conditioning facilities to improve airflow, reduce discomfort and help prevent overcrowding and suffocating conditions.

The committees have been asked to address the identified safety concerns and ensure compliance with fire safety requirements. Officials are also focusing on clear entry and exit routes, improved visibility and effective crowd management to protect visitors during the festivities.

Following the Chorbagan incident, the authorities have intensified inspections of major Durga Puja venues to identify potential hazards and strengthen emergency preparedness.
