ARA-------------------------Today, the entire world is passing through an era where war, economic instability, energy crises, and uncertainties in the global market have confronted human civilization with new challenges. The long-standing conflicts in the Gulf nations and the devastation wrought by war have profoundly impacted the global economy. The continuous rise in crude oil prices, disruptions in supply chains, the weakening of various national currencies against the dollar, and the imbalances emerging in international trade have affected the economic systems of almost every nation. India, too, cannot remain untouched by these circumstances. India imports a significant portion of its energy requirements and is also one of the world's largest consumers of gold. In such a situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to his fellow citizens to exercise restraint in fuel consumption and limit gold purchases is not merely economic advice; rather, it is an act of visionary foresight undertaken in the national interest. The unfortunate reality is that a subject upon which the entire nation should have united to reflect seriously—Modi’s appeal for austerity—has instead been weaponized into a political controversy. While some opposition parties characterized the Prime Minister’s appeal as a move designed to instill fear among the public, others labeled it an attempt to mask the government's failures. In reality, however, this appeal serves as a message to alert the nation to potential future challenges and to encourage the adoption of self-discipline in a timely manner. This is not a subject for political maneuvering, but rather a matter of national responsibility. At a time when major nations across the globe are grappling with economic crises, if India’s Prime Minister offers the citizens a guiding principle of restraint and austerity, it should be viewed not through a political lens, but from a national perspective. This is not the first instance in which the Prime Minister has appealed for austerity and restraint out of a collective concern for sustaining the nation's progress.
India’s culture has, at its very core, always been centered on restraint. In the Indian philosophy of life, restraint is regarded not merely as a personal virtue, but as the greatest source of strength in life itself. Our sages, ascetics, and great figures have always taught us to distinguish between necessity and luxury. Luminaries such as Mahavir, Buddha, Gandhi, and Vinoba Bhave identified renunciation and restraint as humanity's greatest strengths. Indian culture advocates consuming only as much as is necessary, for unlimited consumption ultimately breeds crisis. This is precisely why Indian civilization has remained sustainable and balanced for thousands of years. Today, as the entire world grapples with the adverse consequences of consumerism, India's culture—rooted in such restraint—can offer a path toward a solution. Indian society's fascination with gold runs deep, spanning both historical and cultural dimensions. Gold occupies a special place in weddings, family celebrations, religious traditions, and the pursuit of social prestige. However, it is also a stark reality that the majority of India's gold is imported. Every year, billions of dollars from our foreign exchange reserves are expended on gold imports. Rather than being utilized for productive purposes or industrial growth, this gold often lies dormant—locked away in homes and bank lockers. At a time when pressure on foreign exchange reserves is mounting and the value of the Rupee is steadily declining, an appeal for restraint in gold purchases holds immense economic relevance. This is not a measure taken in opposition to anyone's traditions, but rather a step taken in the interest of the nation's economic resilience.
Similarly, exercising restraint in fuel consumption is also the need of the hour. A significant portion of India's energy requirements is met through imported oil. Due to conflict and instability in the Gulf nations, oil prices have been on a continuous upward trajectory. This has a direct ripple effect on the costs of petrol, diesel, transportation, industrial operations, and overall inflation. If citizens were to curb unnecessary fuel usage, make greater use of public transportation, and integrate energy conservation into their daily lifestyles, it would not only provide relief to the national economy but also contribute significantly to environmental protection. Restraint implies not merely renunciation, but also foresight and a sense of responsibility. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal appears to be inspired by precisely this spirit of responsibility. He did not advocate for any form of coercion or imposition of restrictions; instead, he sought the voluntary cooperation of the citizens. This is the hallmark of democratic leadership. The duty of a responsible Prime Minister is not merely to take action once a crisis has struck, but also to recognize the early warning signs of a crisis and prepare the public in a timely manner. Today, while many countries across the globe are witnessing severe inflation, unemployment, and social unrest stemming from economic instability, India remains in a relatively stable position. This is not merely a coincidence; rather, it is the result of the economic policies implemented over recent years under Prime Minister Modi's leadership—specifically, the expansion of infrastructure, the growth of the digital economy, the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) campaign, and India's strengthened standing on the global stage. It is also noteworthy that, despite facing global crises, India has ensured that its citizens were not subjected to an excessive economic burden. From the pandemic to situations arising from geopolitical conflicts, the Government of India has consistently rolled out relief schemes, provided free rations to the poor, extended various forms of assistance to farmers and the middle class, and taken numerous measures to maintain the stability of the economy. Even amidst a global recession and an atmosphere of war, India continues to rank among the world's fastest-growing economies. This stands as a testament to Prime Minister Modi's astute leadership and foresight.
Regrettably, even on matters of such vital national interest, certain political... Political parties are failing to rise above narrow politics. In a democracy, everyone possesses the right to criticize; however, weighing every issue on the scales of political gain and loss runs counter to the national interest. If the Prime Minister appeals to the public for restraint, the opposition, too, ought to work toward raising public awareness rather than fostering an atmosphere of fear and confusion. Politics is deemed healthy only as long as it remains aligned with the national interest. However, when politics devolves into mere opposition for the sake of opposition—and begins to view even national crises as mere opportunities—it serves only to weaken democracy. Today, the imperative is for the entire nation to think as one family, prioritizing the national interest above all else. In times of crisis, restraint, discipline, and cooperation constitute a nation's greatest strengths. History has repeatedly demonstrated that whenever India has faced a crisis, Indian society has exhibited extraordinary self-sacrifice and unity. From the freedom struggle to times of war, the Indian people have consistently risen above their personal interests to prioritize the national interest. Today, once again, we must recognize that unnecessary consumption, a penchant for ostentation, and unbridled luxury ultimately erode the nation's economic resilience.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal must be viewed within this broader context. It is not merely a message to refrain from purchasing gold or to conserve fuel; rather, it is a message of self-restraint, self-discipline, and national responsibility. The very essence of Indian culture lies in the principle that individuals should, through their conduct, contribute to the strengthening of both society and the nation. If we were to integrate restraint into our daily lives, solutions to numerous economic, social, and environmental challenges could emerge spontaneously. Amidst the era of uncertainty and crisis that the world is currently navigating, India stands in a relatively strong position. The credit for this belongs both to the resilience of the Indian people and to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At such a juncture, what is required is not a cycle of political accusations and counter-accusations, but rather national unity and a positive mindset. Restraint is not merely an economic policy; it is the very bedrock of nation-building. If we can grasp this spirit, we will not only be able to face current crises but also build a strong and self-reliant India for future generations.
