ARA---------------------------The combination of the ongoing wedding season and rumors regarding a petrol shortage has created a tense situation in the city. On Monday, long queues of vehicles were observed at most petrol pumps across the city, forcing people to wait for hours. In several locations, the situation deteriorated to such an extent that altercations and heated arguments broke out between motorists and petrol pump staff.
According to locals, crowds began converging on the petrol pumps early in the morning. As the day progressed, the queues grew even longer. Traffic movement was also disrupted due to the heavy congestion caused by two-wheelers and four-wheelers. In several areas, traffic jams ensued, causing significant inconvenience to the general public.
A major contributing factor to this rush is the wedding season, during which vehicular movement increases significantly due to weddings and other auspicious ceremonies. Furthermore, rumors circulating about a potential petrol shortage have triggered panic among the public.
Consequently, people rushed to the pumps to fill up their tanks with more petrol than they actually needed. Petrol pump operators acknowledge that there has indeed been a slight dip in supply. According to them, they are currently receiving 10 to 15 percent less petrol compared to last year.
For this reason, they are distributing petrol in a controlled manner to ensure that as many people as possible can access fuel. At some pumps, the sale of petrol in bottles has been prohibited, and even for vehicle tanks, only a limited quantity of petrol is being dispensed.
One pump operator explained that if they were to dispense petrol without any restrictions, their entire stock would be depleted within just a few hours. Therefore, out of necessity, they are compelled to limit the quantity of petrol dispensed. However, this arrangement has left many people disgruntled, leading them to accuse the pump staff of acting arbitrarily. Amidst the crowds and disarray, heated arguments and altercations broke out in several places.
Some individuals alleged that certain vehicles were being given priority and allowed to refuel without having to wait in line, which further escalated the disputes. However, additional staff members were deployed at most pumps to manage the situation. Clarifying the entire matter, BPCL Sales Officer Kanhu Charan Pradhan stated that there is no need for panic.
He said, “Crowds at petrol pumps have increased due to the ongoing wedding season. There is an adequate supply of petrol and diesel. People should not pay heed to rumors and should refrain from panic-buying fuel.”
The administration is also appealing to the public to maintain composure and to purchase petrol and diesel only as per their actual requirements. Officials believe that if people disregard the rumors, the situation will soon return to normal.
Currently, crowds persist at petrol pumps across Ara city; however, it is expected that with administrative intervention and the dissemination of accurate information, the situation will soon be brought under control.
Bhojpur District Magistrate Tanay Sultania held a press conference on Monday to provide updates on the ongoing administrative actions within the district. He informed that continuous departmental actions are being undertaken as part of an anti-encroachment drive across various subdivisions and blocks of the district, including the Ara headquarters. The administration is fully active in identifying and removing illegal encroachments, and strict directives have been issued to the concerned officials. The DM clarified that there is absolutely no shortage of gas cylinders or petrol in the district. He stated that the rumors regarding shortages circulating in certain areas are completely unfounded. The district administration team is continuously raising public awareness—through social media and other channels—that supplies remain normal and there is no cause for panic. He appealed to the general public not to pay attention to rumors and to refrain from further circulating any misleading information. The administration is keeping a close watch on the situation, and the supply of essential commodities continues to flow smoothly.
