ARA---------------------------Serious questions have once again arisen regarding development works and the utilization of government funds in the Shahpur Nagar Panchayat. During a meeting held on October 9, 2026, the Empowered Standing Committee of the Nagar Panchayat passed a proposal to reconstruct a road and a drain in Ward No. 9 that are already in perfectly good condition. It has become a topic of discussion among local citizens and informed residents: how was such a proposal passed without any proper assessment, given that the road and drains are already in excellent shape?
To understand the matter in detail: the Nagar Panchayat has passed separate proposals for road and drain construction in Ward No. 9. Under the first proposal, a PCC road is to be constructed from Nagina Teli's house to Chhoti Mathiya Chofal in the main market.
Meanwhile, the second proposal outlines a plan to build a PCC road stretching from Chhoti Mathiya Chofal, past Sohrai Keshri's mill, up to Rampal Mahto's house. Apart from these two, a third—and most shocking—proposal concerns the construction of a drain; it proposes building a drain along the route from Nagina Teli's house, through Chhoti Mathiya Chofal, to Rampal Mahto's house.
However, when the 'Khabrein Aapki' team visited the site to inspect these three projects and spoke with locals, a surprising truth came to light. The investigation revealed that the road slated for reconstruction by the Empowered Board is actually in excellent condition, with no issues hindering movement or traffic. Furthermore, the very drain for which the new construction proposal has been approved had a concrete slab installed just last year; it remains structurally sound and fully functional. This raises a valid question: what could be the reason for reconstructing a structure that is already sturdy and in good condition? Is this merely a scheme to siphon off funds by falsely portraying the structure as weak or dilapidated on paper?
Expressing strong disapproval of these developments, local resident and LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Vidyanand Pandey has leveled serious allegations. He asserts that such proposals could not possibly be passed without collusion between public representatives and officials. The underlying motive could be to issue fresh tenders or to pass fraudulent bills against the public exchequer by claiming departmental work.
This situation casts a significant shadow over administrative transparency and accountability. What, after all, is the technical or administrative justification for rebuilding a perfectly good road and a functional drain? Does the Nagar Panchayat have no other areas genuinely in need of development where these funds could be utilized? The possibility of the misuse of public funds and financial irregularities in such cases cannot be ruled out.
He emphasized the need for the town's Executive Officer to take cognizance of the matter. An impartial inquiry must be conducted into the three proposals approved for Ward No. 9 to clarify the circumstances under which a plan was devised to squander public money on an already sound road and drain. Such measures are essential to curb the misappropriation of public funds in the future and ensure that development work reaches areas where it is truly needed.
