Tensions Rise Over Strait of Hormuz as China Urges Iran to Ensure Safe Navigation
Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Wang Yi has urged Iran to guarantee the safety and freedom of international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route. This marks the first time Beijing has publicly made such a request since Tehran began tightening its grip on the strategic waterway during its ongoing conflict with the United States.
During a phone conversation on April 15, Wang Yi conveyed China’s concerns to his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability in the region to prevent disruptions in global energy supplies. The situation has become more precarious due to the U.S. blockade, which has reportedly restricted the movement of oil and gas shipments from Iranian ports, raising fears of a broader energy crisis.
China, a key ally of Iran and its largest oil importer, is particularly sensitive to any disruption in the Strait, which handles nearly 20% of the world’s oil trade. Meanwhile, a Pakistani delegation led by Asim Munir has arrived in Tehran to discuss fresh peace proposals aimed at facilitating a second round of talks between the United States and Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow 55-kilometer-wide passage between Iran and Oman, remains one of the most vital chokepoints in global maritime trade. Any instability in this region carries significant implications for the global economy, making China’s call for safe navigation a move of considerable international importance.
