Sri Lanka Seminar Calls for Stronger Action on Gender Equity and Women’s Empowerment

COLOMBO (RNI) : Experts, academics, students and social leaders from India and Sri Lanka gathered at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura on Tuesday for the India–Sri Lanka Leadership Exchange Programme on “Geo-Political Perspectives on Gender Issues,” highlighting the urgent need for stronger action on gender equity, women's empowerment, inclusive education and social justice.

Held at the historic Wimaladharma Mansion, the seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Asha Fernando and coordinated by Dr. Kaushalya Hewawasam. The event served as a platform for cross-border dialogue on gender-related challenges and solutions in South Asia.

Opening the programme, Prof. Rasanjalee Perera emphasized the importance of strengthening legal frameworks, governance systems and educational opportunities to improve the status of women in Sri Lanka.

«"Empowering women through education and rights-based governance is essential for sustainable national development," Prof. Perera said.»

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Dr. Asha Fernando highlighted the psychological and emotional challenges faced by working women and called upon institutions to create supportive workplace environments and robust mental health support systems.

«"Women's participation in society can only flourish when institutions recognize and respond to their mental health and well-being needs," she noted.»

Speaking on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Dr. Kaushalya Hewawasam urged policymakers, educators and community leaders to take stronger action against discrimination and violence.

«"Laws alone are not enough; awareness, accountability and committed leadership are equally necessary to ensure safety and dignity for all," she said.»

Representing India, Dr. Asma Arshi, Executive Director of Ansar Welfare Trust, spoke on women’s empowerment, child rights, education and financial independence. She emphasized the importance of strengthening India–Sri Lanka cooperation to create greater opportunities for women and young people.

«"Every woman has something special to contribute to society. Empowering women through education, financial independence and leadership opportunities strengthens families, communities and nations," Dr. Arshi stated.»

The programme concluded with a panel discussion titled “Advancing Gender Equity in Academia: Empowering Undergraduates for Inclusive Higher Education,” where participants explored strategies for creating more inclusive academic environments and enhancing student leadership.

More than 80 undergraduate students from the Departments of Women & Gender Studies, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology and Humanities participated in the exchange, reflecting strong interest in gender issues among young scholars.

The event was organized by the Centre for Women Thinkers & Scientists and the Gender Cell of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, in collaboration with Ansar Welfare Trust, India, and supported by the India–Sri Lanka Foundation.

The organizers said the initiative aimed to strengthen cross-border leadership, promote academic collaboration and encourage collective action toward a more equitable and inclusive future for both nations.
