CEC Row: CJP’s Saurav Das to Submit Intimation Letter Ahead of October 10 Jantar Mantar Protest
New Delhi: Security was stepped up around the Parliament Street police station on Wednesday, October 7, ahead of the planned visit of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) convenor Saurav Das. Das is scheduled to submit an “intimation letter” to the Delhi Police regarding the organisation’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10.
The CJP’s proposed demonstration is aimed at demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and seeking the withdrawal of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Das said he would reach the police station at 10 a.m. to formally inform the Delhi Police about the proposed protest.
In a post on X, Das said that the Constitution provides citizens with the right to assemble and protest peacefully. The move comes amid heightened tensions in Delhi over demonstrations related to the Election Commission and the ongoing dispute surrounding the SIR exercise.
Das’s planned visit comes hours after Delhi Police detained around 260 people, including 10 MPs, during an INDIA bloc protest demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. According to the police, no permission had been sought or granted for the demonstration, while prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were in force in the New Delhi area.
The latest development also comes amid repeated attempts by protest groups to formally inform Delhi Police about planned demonstrations against the SIR and the Chief Election Commissioner. Last week, All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha and a delegation had visited the Parliament Street police station to submit an intimation letter regarding their proposed October 2 march towards Jantar Mantar.:::
