Tamil Nadu Political Drama Continues: Vijay Falls Short of Majority, Governor Refuses Immediate Government Formation

The political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu has intensified after the assembly election results delivered a fractured mandate, breaking the state’s decades-old two-party dominance. Actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the biggest surprise of the election, winning 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly during their debut electoral contest.

The stunning performance disrupted the traditional dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which together failed to cross the 100-seat mark. However, despite becoming the single largest party, TVK remains six seats short of the 118-seat majority required to form a stable government.

The Congress party has extended support with its five MLAs, taking the alliance tally to 113. Hoping to stake claim to form the government and gather additional support before a floor test, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday.

However, the meeting did not go in TVK’s favour. Sources indicate that the Governor made it clear that being the single largest party alone is not enough and insisted that Vijay must first demonstrate concrete support from at least 118 legislators before any invitation to form the government can be considered.

The Raj Bhavan is reportedly unwilling to risk political instability in a state as significant as Tamil Nadu. Officials believe that a clear majority must be established before moving ahead with the oath-taking process.

The current situation is being viewed as highly unusual in Tamil Nadu politics, where power has traditionally alternated between the DMK and AIADMK for nearly six decades. Vijay’s entry into politics has dramatically altered the state’s political landscape and created a rare hung assembly scenario.

Attention is now focused on whether TVK can secure support from smaller parties and independent MLAs in the coming days, or if Tamil Nadu is headed toward prolonged political uncertainty and intense coalition negotiations.
