ARA-------------------------V.P. Singh was a true messiah for the poor, Dalits, backward classes, and the marginalized! Humble tributes and profound salutations to the former Prime Minister of India, the late Vishwanath Pratap Singh, on his birth anniversary.
The late V.P. Singh was one of those rare leaders in Indian politics who prioritized social justice over power. His entire political career was dedicated to fighting for the rights of the poor, Dalits, backward classes, extremely backward classes, minorities, and marginalized sections of society.
As Prime Minister, he transformed the nation's social and political landscape by implementing the recommendations of the Mandal Commission in 1990. Based on these recommendations, a 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) was introduced in central government jobs. This historic decision opened doors to education, employment, and a life of dignity for children from millions of backward, extremely backward, and marginalized families.
V.P. Singh believed that democracy would only strengthen if all sections of society were granted equal opportunities. Following the implementation of the Mandal Commission's recommendations, lakhs of young people gained opportunities to advance in government services, administration, education, and other sectors. Today, many of the country's officials, teachers, doctors, engineers, and public representatives are products of that very policy of social justice.
Certain forces opposed this move towards social justice. The Bharatiya Janata Party withdrew its support from the V.P. Singh government at the time, leading to the government's collapse. Yet, V.P. Singh refused to compromise his principles to cling to power. He made it clear that social justice and the dignity of the marginalized were far more important to him than holding office.
In Bihar, the National President of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the respected Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav, played a pivotal role in advancing this ideology of social justice. During his tenure as Chief Minister, he took numerous steps to ensure the participation of backward classes, extremely backward classes, Dalits, and minorities in governance, administration, education, and employment, while taking the politics of social justice to the masses.
Today, as we remember the late V.P. Remembering Singh Ji is not merely about paying tribute to a leader; it is about honoring the struggle for social justice, equal opportunities, and constitutional rights—a fight that bestowed a new identity and dignity upon millions of marginalized people.
The life of the late V.P. Singh Ji conveys the message that a true leader of the people is one who struggles not for power, but for the rights of the weaker and marginalized sections of society.
On his birth anniversary, we salute his dedication to social justice, equality, and democratic values.
