ARA-----------------------------Had civil society, the intelligentsia, eminent and respected individuals, journalists, and those who believe in democracy fearlessly opposed the so-called "encounter culture" from the very beginning, we would not be witnessing such tragic incidents and controversies today.
Shooting a person—whether after apprehending, detaining, or chasing them—can never be a substitute for justice under any circumstances. Retaliatory action taken in self-defense during a life-threatening attack on the police is a different matter entirely. However, taking a life outside the due process of law runs counter to the democratic system and constitutional values.
Our country possesses a complete judicial system—comprising courts, judges, lawyers, and constitutional provisions—to punish criminals. Punishing the guilty is the prerogative of the judiciary, not of the government or police officials. If an individual is involved in murder, robbery, kidnapping, rape, or other serious crimes, it is the government's duty to ensure a fair investigation and secure a harsh punishment through a speedy trial within two to three months. This constitutes the rule of law and represents the very soul of democracy.
A regrettable situation arises when the administration appears to act based on caste, religion, political affiliations, political gains or losses, or influence. Such a tendency not only violates the spirit of the Constitution but also makes a mockery of democratic values, the dignity of constitutional offices, and the oath of office and secrecy.
In a democracy, the government's strength stems from the rule of law, not from an atmosphere of fear. Respect for the courts, adherence to the law, and the protection of every citizen's constitutional rights are the hallmarks of a civilized society.
Today, there is a need for every conscious citizen, journalist, intellectual, and public representative to raise their voice against injustice. Calling a wrong "wrong" and a right "right" is the true mark of allegiance to democracy. No one can be above the law, and a bullet can never take the place of justice under any circumstances.
