PATNA---------------------------The Patna High Court has ordered a major and immediate ban on the use of red bricks in Bihar state government infrastructure projects. Justice Sandeep Kumar issued this important directive while hearing a petition filed by a Bricks firm. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for February 17, 2026.

Taking a strong stance against the disregard and disregard of environmental regulations, the court clarified that red bricks will not be used in the construction of school buildings in Bihar. The High Court directed the Bihar government to ensure strict compliance with environmental regulations in all infrastructure projects in the state.

The court specifically ordered the District Magistrate of West Champaran to immediately stop the use of red bricks in the 560-bed residential school building project under construction at Chimniya Bazaar in Jogapatti.

In its directive, the High Court stated that only fly ash bricks should be used in government construction projects. The court directed officials to strictly follow the directives issued by the Central Government through the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change on December 31, 2021.

The court emphasized that 100% use of fly ash bricks is mandatory in building construction within a 300-kilometer radius of a thermal power plant. The court questioned how red bricks were being used instead of fly ash bricks in such projects, terming it a blatant violation of environmental regulations.

The court also questioned the Bihar Educational Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (BIS), as to why red bricks were being used in the construction of a residential school building in West Champaran when fly ash bricks were required as per the regulations. Petitioner's lawyer, Girijesh Kumar, assured the court that he would advise his client to build the building in accordance with the regulations.
