DELHI----------------------------The biggest change in the history of badminton is about to take place. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has approved a new scoring system. Under this system, match results will now be decided over three games of 15 points each (best-of-three), rather than 21 points.
The BWF officially adopted the new 3x15 scoring system during its Annual General Meeting held in Horsens, Denmark. The proposal received more than two-thirds of the votes cast in its favor.
This decision signifies that the old 3x21 points scoring format—which had been in place for nearly two decades—will now be replaced. Under the new system, matches will be played as a best-of-three series of 15-point games, rather than 21-point games.
The BWF has justified this decision by arguing that this shorter format will streamline match schedules, create more exciting and high-pressure moments, and contribute to player welfare.
BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul stated that this decision marks a significant milestone for the future of badminton. Leeswadtrakul remarked, "We are shaping a sport that resonates with the next generation, while simultaneously continuing to invest in the long-term future of our players."
She further added, "The objective of the 3x15 scoring system is to make badminton even more exciting and competitive, optimize schedules, ensure greater consistency in match duration, and provide potential benefits regarding player welfare and recovery."
She continued, "We acknowledge that change can sometimes give rise to concerns, particularly in a sport with such deeply rooted traditions. However, this decision does not alter the fundamental essence of badminton. The skill, strategy, physical and mental challenges, and sheer excitement of the game will all remain exactly as they are."
