ARA-----------------------------How deadly is dementia? From memory loss to even identity difficulties, read Dr. Rohit Upadhyay's important advice. Alzheimer's is considered the most common and complex form of dementia, which gradually impacts a person's memory and personality.

Alzheimer's is considered the most common and complex form of dementia, which gradually impacts a person's memory and personality. It usually begins with mild forgetfulness, but over time, patients experience difficulty recognizing time, place, and even their loved ones.

According to Dr. Rohit Upadhyay, a senior physician at IGIMS, Alzheimer's is a progressive neurodegenerative disease in which neuron cells in the brain gradually become damaged and die. This process impacts cognitive function.

Dr. Upadhyay explains that dementia is not a single disease, but a group of symptoms. These symptoms include memory loss, difficulty finding the right words during conversation, impaired decision-making, changes in behavior and personality, confusion, depression, and increased dependence on daily tasks. The patient gradually loses self-reliance, which increases mental and emotional stress on the family.

Although dementia and Alzheimer's cannot be completely prevented, some precautionary measures can reduce the risk. According to experts, regular physical exercise, a balanced and nutritious diet, and brain-stimulating activities such as reading, solving puzzles, or learning new things are beneficial. Keeping blood pressure and sugar levels under control, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and being socially active contribute to brain health.

Dr. Rohit Upadhyay explains that while there is currently no permanent cure for these diseases, medications, cognitive therapy, lifestyle changes, and timely medical intervention can slow the progression of symptoms. With proper care and support, significant improvements in a patient's quality of life are possible.
