Anti-War Protests Erupt in New York After US Strikes on Iran, Cities Placed on High Alert
New York (RNI) Anti-war protests broke out in New York City on Sunday (local time) after the United States carried out airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Demonstrators took to the streets to condemn the military action, while authorities increased security across major locations in the city amid fears of possible repercussions.
Hundreds of protesters marched through several streets of New York, waving Palestinian flags and holding placards that read “Hands Off Iran” and “Stop the War on Iran.” The demonstrations were in response to Operation Midnight Hammer, the US-led military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities in Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz. Many protesters also criticized Israel, accusing it of triggering the wider conflict with Iran and condemning its ongoing military operations in Gaza.
As tensions escalated, the New York City Police Department said it had deployed additional resources across key areas of the city. In a statement posted on social media, the department said extra security personnel were being stationed at religious, cultural and diplomatic sites as a precautionary measure.
Police officials said they are closely monitoring the situation in Iran and coordinating with federal partners to assess any potential impact on New York City. Authorities emphasized that the heightened security presence is intended to ensure public safety as global developments continue to unfold.
The protests came a day after US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had carried out strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. According to the US administration, the operation was aimed at weakening Iran’s nuclear programme.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth later confirmed the success of the mission during a media briefing alongside Dan Caine, Chairperson of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Hegseth said the strikes targeted Iran’s Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz facilities and were conducted by the United States Central Command during a precision operation carried out overnight.
He stated that the attacks were intended to destroy or significantly degrade Iran’s nuclear capabilities and described the mission as a major operational success. The developments have further intensified tensions in the region while also sparking protests and security concerns in several US cities.
