ARA---------------------------Veteran Hindi cinema actor Amol Palekar took center stage during a special session held at the Nalanda International Literature Festival. On this occasion, he candidly shared his thoughts on cinema, film criticism, and his own creative experiences. Joining him in conversation during the session were his wife—author Sandhya Gokhale—and veteran film journalist Ajay Brahmatmaj.
During the discussion, drawing upon his extensive cinematic career and referencing a book he has authored, Amol Palekar asserted that the success or failure of any film should not be judged solely by its box office collections. According to him, a film's true worth is determined by its subject matter, sensitivity, social impact, and the lasting impression it leaves on the minds of the audience.
He further stated that the role of a film critic should not be limited merely to declaring whether a film is a "hit" or a "flop." Rather, a critic's duty also entails understanding and articulating how a film engages in a dialogue with its specific era and society.
Throughout the session, Amol Palekar also shared several fascinating anecdotes regarding his films and his journey as an actor. His engaging and heartfelt conversation captivated the audience for an extended period, infusing the entire atmosphere with vibrancy.
At the conclusion of the event, a special artwork—created during a live painting session organized by students from the Patna College of Arts and Crafts—was presented to Amol Palekar. Additionally, he was felicitated with a floral bouquet, a traditional ceremonial stole (*Angavastra*), and a clay figurine crafted by local artisans, symbolizing the rich cultural heritage of Nalanda.
By underscoring the profound interconnections between cinema, art, and society, this session added a layer of deeper significance to the Nalanda International Literature Festival.
