PATNA--------------------------Patna, the capital of Bihar—renowned for its unwavering commitment to education—now stands at a crossroads where the path ahead seems to lead not toward knowledge, but toward a 'show of force.' The recent shooting incident involving two prominent coaching institutes is not merely a criminal act; it is a symptom of a deep-seated crisis that is hollowing out the very foundations of Bihar's coaching industry. This event epitomizes how commercial ambitions have crossed boundaries, evolving into a challenge for law and order.
Areas like Bhikhna Pahari, Musallahpur Hat, and Kankarbagh in Patna were once hubs where students' dreams took flight; the atmosphere there was steeped in the spirit of learning and struggle. Today, however, an undeclared 'cold war' is playing out among coaching institutes. In the blind race to capture the market, 'teaching quality' has been relegated to the margins, while 'market dominance' has taken center stage. When commercial rivalry between educational institutions escalates into personal vendettas, threats, and ultimately the use of guns, the question inevitably arises: are we shaping the students' future, or are we dragging them into the realm of 'power politics'?
A teacher is a builder of society and a guiding light. Students learn not only subject knowledge from them but also conduct, values, and discipline. Yet, when teachers or their institutions find themselves embroiled in serious allegations—such as attempted murder (Section 307) and the illegal brandishing of weapons—what message are they conveying to society? Students taking to the streets to shout slogans demanding someone's release or arrest indicates that we have steered our youth power in the wrong direction. The environment has ceased to be academic and has instead become a ‘political arena,’ where students waste their precious time on ‘social media wars’ and protests rather than on their studies.
The biggest challenge before the police is to get to the bottom of this dispute and bring the facts to light impartially. Whether it is Khan Sir or Roshan Anand, no individual has the right to violate the law simply by virtue of their ‘influence’ or ‘student following.’ While arguments of ‘self-defense’ are being raised regarding the firing incident, the brandishing of weapons in public spaces and the transformation of coaching centers into fortresses cannot be accepted in any civilized society. If the administration fails to curb this ‘Naxal-like’ trend within the ‘coaching hub’ in time, Patna’s coaching hub risks becoming notorious as a new epicenter for ‘gang wars’ in the future.
This incident serves as a ‘wake-up call’ for all coaching center operators. The process of reform must be visible on the ground, not just on paper:
*Institutional Dignity and Ethics*: Coaching operators must realize that they are not merely shop owners but architects of the future. They need to establish a ‘Code of Conduct’ that prioritizes student safety and social harmony over commercial interests.
*Strict Administrative Monitoring*: The district administration must implement a rigorous policy regarding weapon monitoring, entry regulations, and safety standards within these coaching hubs. A thorough verification of the weapons and backgrounds of private security guards employed there is essential.
*Student Awareness*: Most importantly, students must understand that they are not ‘foot soldiers’ or ‘propagandists’ for any institution or teacher. Their sole objective should be the acquisition of knowledge, not the establishment of an institution's ‘dominance.’ Ultimately, it is the students who bear the brunt of these protests staged in the name of student welfare.
Patna should be defined by ‘knowledge,’ not by ‘gunfire.’ Bihar’s pride lies in the legacy of ‘Aryabhata’ and ‘Chanakya,’ not in expanding ‘market share’ at the barrel of a gun. If this dispute is not resolved in time, it will not only destroy the reputation of these institutions but also plunge into darkness the futures of thousands of students who come to Patna filled with hope. The time has come for the stalwarts of the education sector to sheathe their swords and write a new chapter in education using the power of the pen. Otherwise, history will remember them not for their ‘contributions,’ but for their ‘hubris and downfall.’
