ARA-----------------------------On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all fellow journalists who engage in independent and impartial journalism.
Journalism—often referred to as the fourth pillar of democracy—has the fundamental objective of questioning those in power, amplifying the voice of the people, and fearlessly presenting the truth. An independent press is absolutely essential for a robust democracy.
Under political pressure, a direct or indirect influence of the ruling power is increasingly being observed over many media institutions—a trend that is detrimental to a healthy democracy.
The centralization of media ownership in the hands of large industrialists raises serious questions regarding the impartiality of news reporting.
All too often, journalists fall victim to self-censorship due to pressure or fear. In the era of social media, the rapid proliferation of fake news has emerged as a major challenge for credible journalism. In various parts of the country, journalists are frequently subjected to threats, harassment, and physical attacks.
India boasts a glorious history of journalism; however, in contemporary times, the issue of press freedom remains a subject of continuous debate. The decline in India's ranking in various international reports is also a matter of grave concern. Despite these challenges, numerous courageous journalists continue to work tirelessly to bring the truth to light.
I demand that: Journalists be provided with a safe environment in which to work without fear; The independence of media institutions be safeguarded; Strict measures be implemented to curb fake news; and The public, too, actively support responsible and impartial media.
In conclusion, he stated that press freedom is not merely an issue concerning journalists; rather, it is a fundamental question inextricably linked to the rights of every single citizen. Democracy will truly be strengthened only when its journalists are free. On this World Press Freedom Day, let us all resolve to stand in support of impartial, fearless, and responsible journalism.
