India an Emerging Economic Power: Droupadi Murmu

New Delhi (RNI) President Droupadi Murmu today said that India is not only the world’s largest democracy but also an emerging economic power.

Mrs. Murmu was addressing trainee officers of the 2024 batch of the Indian Foreign Service at Rashtrapati Bhavan here. On this occasion, she congratulated the trainees.

She said that while beginning their journey, officers should carry with them the civilizational values of knowledge — peace, pluralism, non-violence, and dialogue. They should also remain open to the ideas, people and perspectives of every culture they may encounter.

She noted that the world around them is witnessing rapid changes in terms of geopolitical shifts, digital revolution, climate change, and multilateralism. As young officers, their agility and adaptability will be the key to our success.

The President said that whether it is the problems arising out of disparities between the Global North and South, the threat of cross-border terrorism, or the implications of climate change — India today is an indispensable part of the solution to the world’s major challenges. India is not only the largest democracy in the world, but also a steadily emerging economic power. Our voice matters.

Highlighting the growing importance of cultural diplomacy in present times, the President said that connections made from the heart and soul are always strong. Be it Yoga, Ayurveda, millets (Shri Ann), or India’s musical, artistic, linguistic, and spiritual traditions — more creative and ambitious efforts will showcase and promote this vast heritage abroad.

The President said that our diplomatic efforts must be closely linked to our domestic needs and our objective of becoming a developed India by 2047. She urged the young officers to consider themselves not only as custodians of India’s interests but also as ambassadors of its spirit. L.S.
