PATNA--------------------------Eastern India's first greenfield airport is set to be built in Sonpur, Bihar. This 1302 crore project will strengthen the state's air connectivity and enable 24-hour flight operations.
Great news has arrived for the people of Bihar. The state government has approved the construction of Eastern India's first and the country's fifth largest greenfield airport. This airport will be built in Sonpur, significantly transforming the state's air connectivity. Approximately 1302 crore rupees have been approved for this ambitious project. The process of acquiring approximately 4228 acres of land for the airport's construction will also begin.
According to information received, this airport will be built in the Dariyapur Chanwar area, located north of the Sonpur-Chhapra four-lane NH and west of the Gandak River. A formal decision on the airport's construction is expected to be taken soon at a state cabinet meeting. Once completed, this airport will provide improved air connectivity to Bihar as well as surrounding states.
The Sonpur Airport runway is planned to be approximately 4,200 meters long, built to international standards. Large passenger and cargo aircraft will be able to land easily on this runway. The airport will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and facilities to provide a world-class experience to passengers.
According to the government's plan, this airport will be included in the list of major greenfield airports in the country, which already includes major projects like the Noida International Airport. To ensure better connectivity to the airport, two new six-lane bridges are being constructed to connect it to the capital Patna. These include a new bridge parallel to the JP Digha Bridge and the Sherpur-Dighwara Bridge. These bridges will significantly facilitate passenger access to the airport.
The construction of the Sonpur Greenfield Airport will enable 24-hour flight operations. This will benefit millions of passengers with direct air services. It will also open up new opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment in the state. The airport is also expected to provide a boost to Bihar's economic development.
The state government is not limited to Sonpur alone. Additionally, airport construction plans are underway in several districts, including Saharsa, Raxaul, Munger, Supaul, Birpur, Valmikinagar, Motihari, Begusarai, Chapra, Bhagalpur, Madhubani, and Gopalganj. This could position Bihar among the nation's leading air network states in the coming years. The Sonpur Airport project is considered a historic step toward Bihar's development, strengthening both the state's identity and connectivity.
