PATNA----------------------Prashant Kishor’s victory demonstrates that no political party should view voters as their subjects, nor dare to harbor arrogance akin to Ravana’s. The concept of "traditional strongholds" is fading; Bankipur has proven that victory belongs to those who work sincerely for the public.
In the *Ramayana*, Ravana was not defeated solely due to a lack of power; his arrogance was the primary cause of his downfall. He believed no one in the world could harm him. He dismissed his adversaries as insignificant, rejected the counsel of well-wishers, and convinced himself of his own invincibility. Ultimately, that very arrogance led to the destruction of his empire.
In a democracy, voters repeatedly convey the message that no party or leader is greater than the people. When a political party or its leaders begin to believe a seat is so secure that victory is guaranteed regardless of the candidate fielded, that confidence gradually morphs into arrogance.
A senior BJP leader’s infamous remark—that even a dog or a cat fielded by the BJP in Bankipur would win—became a topic of discussion in this very context. When voters in a constituency perceive that their opinions, the candidate's merit, and public expectations hold no weight, democracy delivers a response through the ballot box.
The Bankipur by-election result is significant in this light. The BJP’s defeat here is not merely an electoral loss; it signals that no political stronghold is permanent. Given the opportunity, voters can dismantle even the most formidable bastions.
This event serves as a message to all political parties: while organizational strength, popularity, and past electoral successes are undoubtedly important, the final verdict rests with the voter. In a democracy, humility, respect for public sentiment, and the selection of a capable candidate form the cornerstone of enduring political success. The story of Ravana teaches us that the decline of power begins not from the outside, but from within—stemming from one's own ego. In politics, too, whenever a party or leader takes the public's mandate lightly, voters eventually remind them that in a democracy, ultimate authority rests not with any individual or party, but with the people.
In the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Patna, Prashant Kishor, founder of Jan Suraaj, breached the BJP's stronghold. His decision to contest the election and his hard work paid off. The BJP first changed its candidate and then fielded another—a move political analysts view as a sign of weakness. The results from Bankipur are now set to become a topic of national discussion. The BJP will review the reasons for its defeat; there is already intense speculation regarding the dissatisfaction of the party's core voters and a shift in the vote base. The opposition has found a new issue to use against the BJP.
This victory will infuse Prashant Kishor with fresh political energy. He has long been striving to establish his party in Bihar. His activity is now likely to intensify across the board—from the legislative assembly to the streets. At the same time, this result has heightened the challenge for the NDA in Bihar, particularly for Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary.
Meanwhile, the BJP also faced defeat in the Datia by-election in Madhya Pradesh, where Congress's Ghanshyam Singh emerged victorious. However Despite being the ruling party in Madhya Pradesh, the defeat in these two by-elections will not have a direct impact on the governments. Winning and losing elections is a natural part of democracy.
If Prashant Kishor has defeated the BJP in its stronghold during the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Patna, the significance extends beyond just a single seat. In Indian politics, there are certain elections where the impact lies more in the message conveyed than in the numerical outcome. The Bankipur result falls into this category.
The BJP has long considered Bankipur one of its safest constituencies; consequently, the defeat here will prompt introspection within the party. It sends the message that no political fortress is permanent. If voters decide on change, even long-standing electoral equations can shift.
Prashant Kishor stands to gain the most politically from this result. Until now, he was known as a successful election strategist, but this victory will see him emerge as a leader capable of building his own political base. This win will infuse new energy and credibility into the 'Jan Suraaj' initiative. In Bihar politics, he will now be viewed not merely as a strategist but as a potent political challenger.
For the BJP, this result will serve as an occasion for a serious review of candidate selection, local leadership, and organizational coordination. Addressing any discontent or apathy among the party's traditional supporters will become a priority for the leadership. Before the assembly elections, the BJP will undoubtedly re-evaluate its booth management, social equations, and political strategy.
This defeat will also have a psychological impact. It gives the opposition an opportunity to argue that the BJP can be defeated even in its perceived strongholds. This will boost the confidence of opposition parties and workers, potentially making future electoral contests more compelling.
However, it remains equally true that a single by-election does not determine the political trajectory of an entire state. It has no immediate effect on the stability of the government, nor does it allow for a definitive prediction of the assembly election results. However, this result certainly demonstrates that in a democracy, no seat belongs permanently to any single party, and voters possess the capacity to deliver a fresh verdict in every election. The message from Bankipur is clear: while self-confidence is essential in politics, overconfidence and arrogance often prove detrimental. Ultimately, it is the parties that understand the public pulse, value local leadership, and respect voter expectations that maintain a political edge. Therefore, this by-election can be seen not merely as a victory for Prashant Kishor, but also as an indicator of Bihar's evolving political consciousness.
